Using art to develop
ESL and FL skills is a powerful tool for language exploration.
It can be highly motivating for both teachers and students, and
it offers ample opportunities for expanding the boundaries of
classroom communication and discussion. Coupled with museum visits,
teaching language through art can open new territory and transform
the learning experience for teachers and students alike.
To sum up, activities which incorporate art in the ESL and FL class
are designed to
- use art as a point of departure for language development
- integrate content areas with language learning
- offer an alternative to grammar-based language programs
- encourage cross-cultural awareness
- lower performance anxiety in second or foreign language learning
